Peaks and Valleys | Sunday Message
The Christian life is filled with peaks and valleys, successes and failures, and blessings and trials. Peaks of victory and valleys of discouragement. Romans 5:3–5 and Deuteronomy 11:11 speak of this. “Peaks and Valleys” is a phrase that is found in Joshua 6:27 and 7:6. Vulnerable Victories. Psalm 20:7 reminds us that self-reliance and self-confidence will not advance us in the Christian life. Babe Ruth said, “Yesterday’s homeruns don’t win today’s games.” The Price of Rebellion. Joshua 7:11–13, 19–21, and 25, as well as Joshua 6:18–19, show us the consequences of disobedience. Tim Keller said, “Our craving, our heart’s desire for things is so strong, it overcomes our conscience. It overcomes our understanding, our reason. Eventually, it will overcome your fear of consequences and even your own sense of self-preservation.” God wants us to prosper, but more than that, He wants us to remain dependent on Him.
