Amy Speropoulos, Communications and Development Manager with The Salvation Army of Memphis & the Mid-South, interviews Linda Mathis, President of the Women's Auxiliary; Judy Weatherly, Recording Secretary of the Auxiliary; and Major Cheryl Gilliam, Memphis Area Commander. The purpose of The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary is to raise public awareness of The Salvation Army, to facilitate services to individuals in need and to strengthen the financial base of the local Salvation Army.

About Stories Behind the Shield

The Salvation Army of Memphis and the Midsouth started 125 years ago by 5 churches in Memphis who donated 500 dollars, that was in the 1900’s and today we stand tall as a beacon of hope, inspiration, and encouragement. We come alongside men, women, and children to help break the chains of poverty, homelessness, and generational poverty. We know to heal Memphis it will take an Army, will you join us and be a part of HIS ARMY and our ARMY, at the Salvation Army, where salvation is free and has an eternal impact!

For many people being part of The Salvation Army is a family tradition. They call themselves "salvationists" and many times their children go on to be active members of The Army as they want to help others through sharing the mission of The Salvation Army.

The Kroc Center of Memphis opened in 2013, since the first day they've welcome guest from all socio-economic backgrounds and from all around Memphis and the Mid-South to be part of their mission.

Amy Speropoulos, Communications and Development Manager with The Salvation Army of Memphis & The Midsouth, interviews Lieutenant Tim and Roslyn Morrison. Lieutenant Roslyn talks about growing up with a rare blood disorder causing her to be sick most of her childhood. Lieutenant Tim shares how he walked away from God and the church following a life alcohol, drug abuse, and being homeless. Finding hope and forgiveness through Jesus, Lieutenant Tim found help through the Salvation Army. Today, Lieutenant Tim and Roslyn Morrison are serving Christ together at The Salvation Army Memphis Purdue Center of Hope.
