Shock and awe is a military doctrine based on the use of overwhelming power and spectacular displays of force to paralyze the enemy's perception of the battlefield and destroy its will to fight. The concept was first used by the United States military during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. It is based on the idea that a display of overwhelming force will cause an adversary to capitulate without having to actually fight. The goal is to create a psychological effect that will cause the enemy to surrender without a fight.
