Reflecting on Godly Motherhood The job description was for Director of Operations, and the requirements went as follows: Standing for hours on end. Unlimited work weeks. No vacations. Must be a skillful negotiator. Degrees in culinary arts, finance, and medicine helpful.
There’s a lot of excitement about this solar eclipse that will be happening today. Some are even suggesting that it’s a sign from Heaven, that judgement is coming specifically on the nation of America. I think eclipses are amazing. They happen once every 18 months or so; we’ve had many over the years. They’re not as rare as some people would suggest.
We all have heard of the horrible fire that hit Lahaina, Maui—where our church Harvest Kumulani is located—back in August last year. It’s one of the worst in American history, sweeping the island and destroying anything in its path. People lost their homes, livelihoods, and, tragically, some even lost their lives. The majority of our congregation on Maui worked and lived in and around Lahaina, meaning that many at Harvest Kumulani lost their homes, jobs, or both in one night. But our church has a great sense of ohana, or, “family.”
It began with 100 students at Columbia University in New York City and has spread from Massachusetts to California and Tennessee to Texas, but increasingly it is clear these efforts are coordinated. The ongoing anti-Israel demonstrations at elite US colleges and universities are exactly what happened in Germany in the 1920s, just years before Nazis took over the country, according to the head of the Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Israel, Dani Dayan. While many of these students have no idea what they are even supporting when they hold signs that say, “We are Hamas,” “Gas the Jews,” and “Final Solution,” many of them do. Even more alarming, professors, who certainly know what they are doing, are joining these protests.
The biggest celebrities in today’s culture aren’t movie stars. They aren’t rock stars or athletes. They are social media stars. In my generation, fame was only available to the most talented people: those who could command attention on the big screen, sing like no one else, throw a touchdown, or put a ball through a hoop. Yes, those people are still famous today.
